Abstract

A metal layer is bonded to a non-metallic object by moulding a non-metallic composition having dispersed therein a filler consisting of metal particles, preferably filaments, e.g. of Cu, Ni, Zn or Ag, and friable non-metallic conductor particles, e.g. of graphite or other conductive carbon or conductive or semi-conductive metal salts, removing a surface of, e.g. by etching, vapour grit blasting or otherwise abrading, and metallizing, preferably electroplating, the moulded object. The process is particularly suitable for chromium or rhodium plating of resinous polymer plastic articles, but can be used for other nonmetallic compositions, e.g. paper, ceramics or rubber. Preferably the volume proportion of filler in the composition is 0.2 to 0.7 and of metal in the filler is between 0.01 and 0.7. The filler may be incorporated into a plastic matrix before or after polymerisating, being kneaded into the polymer particles by ball milling; for a thermosetting resin such as of melamine-formaldehyde, moulding may be effected at the curing temperature of the resin. An initial ductile base-plating of copper and/or soft nickel may be applied from fluoborate baths on to the surface of the moulded object, sufficiently etched e.g. with sodium hydroxide, aqua regia, sulphuric or nitric acid to expose dispersed metal particles, prior to chrome plating from a chromic acid bath.
