Abstract
691,918. Extracting sugar from beet. BREDT, G., LANGEN, E. G. VON, LOESSL, O. VON, [trading as PFEIFER & LANGEN KOLN]. Feb. 28, 1950 [Feb. 28, 1949], No. 5114/50. Classes 81 (i) and 127. Apparatus for extracting sugar from sugar beet slices comprises a worm conveyer 8 in a tower 1 fed with slices by an inclined worm conveyer 5 which enters the tower below juice level and has its upper end near a funnel 7 above juice level, and a distributer 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), which rotates in the opposite direction to the worm 8 and is placed in the tower near the upper part of the inlet for the conveyer 5. The distributer may have inclined surfaces to press slices downwards. The worm 5 may be enclosed in a casing fitted with a screen 11 through which air and excess juice can escape. The worm 5 may enter the tower tangentially to deliver slices in a direction opposed to the movement of the worm 8. The apparatus may also comprise a second tower 2 enclosing a worm conveyer, this tower being connected to the tower 1 by a pipe 3 enclosing a worm conveyer. The extracting liquid, e.g. supplied to the tower 2 through an inlet 9, moves in the opposite direction to the slices.
