Abstract

708,058. Extraction towers. LANGEN, E. Sept.. 20, 1950, No. 23089/50. Classes 81(1) and 127 In an extraction tower for shredded 'material of vegetable origin, e.g. sugar beet sections, the extraction liquid being supplied to the upper part of the tower and the material to be treated to be supplied to the lower part of the tower and moved by a conveyer worm 9 in counter-current to the extraction liquid, the shaft 4 of the conveyer worm which fills the cross-section of the tower is in the form of a tube the diameter of which is approximately onethird of the diameter of the tower, and the conveyer worm arranged on the shaft has a pitch of, at the most, 1:3. As shown the material to be extracted is fed by a conveyer 2 to the upper end of a tube 4 located centrally of the tower 3 and then down this tube by a spiral downwardly feeding conveyer 6 to the feed reversing guide 10 and sieve 11 and then to the extraction conveyer 9 mounted on the tube 4 which carries it upwards against the flow of the extractin liquor entering at 13 and discharging at 15 and it is finally discharged by conveyers 18. As shown in Fig. 2 the shaft 7 of the feeding-in conveyer is hollow and provided with outlet ports 20 and connected at its lower end by a pipe 21 connected to the outlet 15, a cylindrical sieve 22 extending about a metre above the level of the ports and in spaced relation to the central tube, so that the material travelling down the latter is acted upon by the extracting liquid before reaching the extracting conveyer 9. The worm of the latter may be interrupted at intervals for from ¢ to 2/3 turn so that the abutments formed overlap one another, Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown) and fixed retarders placed at the interruptions projecting into the path of the material. The extraction worm may also be composed of a plurality of segment-shaped parts overlapping like roof-tiles, leaving a gap for the liquid to pass through, Fig. 5 (not shown) or have ports therein covered by deflecting flaps, Fig. 6 (not shown).' In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) the extracting worm shaft may be formed by a tube with a cone-shaped lower end against which the material may be pumped in from below.
