Abstract
A refractory composition comprising a base mass of magnesium and/or aluminium silicate crystals is prepared by mixing therewith 40 per cent. by weight of silicon carbide (or other oxidation resistant substance) at least 50 per cent. of which has a grain size of between 0.005 and 0.25 mm. and firing. The base mass may comprise a substance having a high argillaceous earth content and containing more than 40 per cent. of alumina. Specified oxidation resistant substances are the carbides, borides and nitrides of titanium zirconium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, tungsten and molybdenum, elemental silicon and ferrosilicon. Preferably the mixture is dried, dusted with graphite and embedded in a mixture of graphite and quartz sand for firing in a reducing atmosphere. Fluxes may be added e.g. barium carbonate, iron oxide, zinc-copper compounds, magnesium and calcium carbonate, felspar, aluminium silicates, and boric and phosphoric acids or their salts, or the base mass may itself contain the flux e.g. iron containing pot-stone.
