Class 100(ii) Relates to small manually-operated printing- presses of the type referred to in Specification 452,450, comprising a body 1, a type bed 11 mounted in a substantially vertical position on the body associated with inking mechanism and a platen 5 hinged transversely across the body and adapted to be pressed on to the type by a lever 7-8 pivoted on the body. According to the invention the platen is provided with a lever 13 extending past its hinging axis and co-acting with a compression spring 20, rubber block or equivalent shock damping device mounted on the body 1 of the press, and so disposed that movement of said lever during movement of the platen to its open position is resisted by said shock damping device. In the form shown the body 1 is hollow and the lever 13 is pivoted on the platen shaft and moves with the platen, one arm 15 of the lever extending through a slot 16 in the rear of the body to operate inking mechanism in synchronism with the platen movement, and a further stub arm 17 of the lever extending downwardly, and being bifurcated to form two cheeks which are disposed one on each side of a rod 18 carrying the spring 20. As the platen 5 returns to its open position, a block 19 journaled in the cheeks of the lever arm 17 moves rearwardly along the rod 18, its movement being damped by compressing the spring 20. Any tendency of the rod 18 to move during forward movement of the platen is resisted by a further spring 22 mounted on the forward end of the rod 18. The cushioning effect of the spring 20 may be varied by means of an adjusting nut 36 provided at the forward end of the rod 18 and bearing on the exterior of the body 1.
