Abstract

690,880. Shearing boiler tubes. OWEN, W. F. Aug. 8, 1951 [Aug. 19, 1950], No. 20594/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A tool for cutting, prior to removal, boiler &c. tubes &c. expanded in tube plates comprises a guide bush 1 with openings 9, 10 and keyways 8, 11 into which is inserted a cutter member 2 with a longitudinal blade 13 and key 14. The bush is inserted into the tube and the member 2 is guided into the bush by the key 14. The member is driven into the bush by a percussive tool and the cutter 13 cuts longitudinally partly through the tube. At the end of the cut the key 14 leaves the keyway 11 to allow the member to be fitted and the cutter disengaged. The bush is then rotated and a second cut is made to sever a strip from the tube which is then coiled within the tube and the tube freed and removed. The longitudinal cut does not extend to the outside of the tube to prevent injury to the tube plate when the tube is screwed therein. Solid stays may be removed by drilling and then cutting. A sleeve may be removed by clamping a bush, Fig. 9, not shown, on the outside of the sleeve and using a tool for severing the sleeve externally.
