Abstract
566,443. Tools. O'NEILL, J. Aug. 12, 1943, No. 13045. [Class 83 (iii)] A tool for axially slotting tube ends which are left in boiler tube plates after the tubes have been burnt off, to facilitate their removal from the plates, consists of a cylindrical body 1 which is a loose fit in the tube and carries a cutter 5 projecting therefrom so as to cut the slot in the tube, without damaging the tube plate, when driven through the tube, e.g. by a percussive hammer. The cutter may be triangular in cross-section so as to fit a dovetailed slot 3 in the body 1, a shallow groove 8 being provided in the body to receive an ejecting tool for removal of the cutter which may be turned to cause any of its three edges to form the cutting edge or may be turned end for end to provide six cutting edges in turn. The tool is used to cut two parallel slots in the tube, after which the intervening strip of metal may be removed and the tube end then collapsed to loosen it from the tube plate. In a modified construction, the cutter 25, Fig. 7, is pivoted by a pin 26 in a slot 23 of the body 21 and has a V-shaped cutting edge 27 projecting beyond the surface of the body when it meets a shoulder 29 of the slot 23. In this position the cutter will form a slot in a tube end, but on withdrawal of the tool from the tube the cutter will pivot about the pin 26 and lie wholly within the slot 23.
