557,335. Annular drills. GRUENBERG, J. June 3, 1942, No. 7575. [Class 83 (iii)] An annular boring tool 4 has a number of cutters which come into action successively, either singly or in pairs so that each cutter removes only a fraction of the total material removed from the work. The cutters 5 ... 10 make overlapping cuts of the form indicated in Fig. 3. the cutters 5, 6 coming first into operation and the cutters 9, 10 acting last on the outer and inner boundaries respectively of the cutter. Protrusions 11 ... 13 on each side of the tube 4 may be provided with balls to steady the drill and maintain the alignment. For large diameters the tube 4 may be built up of sections with longitudinal joints such as 14, 15. When a hole is formed completely through the work the inner core becomes detached and may be utilized. The cutting edges are formed on the ends of spiral webs extending along the inside and outside of the tubular drill, the webs being either formed integrally with the tube or secured thereto. The number of cutting elements may be varied. In a modification the tool body may be provided with inclined slots instead of spiral ribs, the slots being fitted with adjustable cutting elements.
