Abstract
690,861. Nuclear reactors. IMPERIAL TRUST FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH. May 1, 1942 [April 2, 1941], No. 4425/41. Class 39(iv). A nuclear reactor comprises fissile material (e.g. uranium) and a moderator containing deuterium. The uranium may be present as finely divided metal or oxide, suspended in a gaseous moderator by fans or in a liquid moderator. Alternatively parallel layers of uranium or uranium oxide, spaced 40 cms. apart in D 2 O may form a heterogeneous reactor. A homogeneous reactor may comprise uranium oxide in D 2 O within an aluminium sphere. A ratio of between 100 and 450 atoms of deuterium to one of uranium is preferred. The deuterium may replace hydrogen in hydrocarbons or in compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, the deutero-compounds being prepared by the action of deuterium on the hydrogen compound in the presence of a catalyst, or alternatively synthesised (e.g. polymerization of deuteroethylene), the whole of the hydrogen content being replaced by deuterium. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 614,156 and 614,386.
