Abstract
690,792. Metal-vapour converters. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Sept. 24, 1951 [Jan. 27, 1951], No. 22313/51. Class 39(i) Mercury cathode 2 is rotated by coil 7 and the resulting depression of the surface in the centre uncovers an axially-arranged igniter electrode 5 to start the discharge. A separate exciter anode 4 may be provided; or the igniter may also act as the exciter, when the cathode must be rotated continuously in use; or the igniter and exciter may be combined in a single structure such that only the exciter is above the mercury when at rest, Fig. 2 (not shown). The resistance 6 may be dispensed with if lead 5 is made of high resistance material. The igniter may be passed into the mercury from below, as shown, or from above. For three-phase operation, three separate igniters may be grouped in or about the axis of rotation.
