Class 82(i) In a sintering machine with a windbox open at its upper end and with pallets movable in succession over it, the side walls of the windbox are fitted with bearing bars and the pallets carry wearing bars at each side sliding over the bearing bars and are fitted with flanges spaced inwardly of and extending downwardly to below the contacting surfaces of the bars to protect these surfaces from the hot gases. As shown, each pallet 19 is fitted at each side with a wearing bar 26 slidable over a bearing bar 27 rigidly attached to the side wall 31 of the windbox. A flange 24 on the pallet serves to protect the bearing surfaces, and this flange is rounded at its lower end corners to reduce wear. Channels 32 are provided to supply lubricant to the surfaces. As the pallets leave the windbox they are swung downwards in a vertical circle and a dead plate may be fitted across the end of the windbox so as to fit closely against the undersides of the pallets and their flanges and prevent a gas leak as the pallets leave the horizontal. The pressure between wearing and bearing bars may be reduced to a fixed constant level by a counterweight system attached to the bearing bars, the remainder of the weight of the pallets being taken by rails supporting wheels on the outside of the pallets. The bearing and wearing surfaces may be inclined to the horizontal or may be each V-shaped to align the pallets correctly over the windbox.
