Abstract

689,921. Welding by fusion. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 24, 1950 [March 30, 1950], No. 28810/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XI] A non-consumable electrode for inert gas arcwelding has a core of thoria, zirconia or ceria associated with a metallic body (other than a refractory metal) of high heat conductivity and a melting-point lower than that of the core, e.g. copper, aluminium, steel, iron, brass or silver. The core is supported in a tube of the metal, the cross-sectional area of the core being about half that of the complete electrode. The electrode is used in automatic welding where the work and the welding torch are started moving relatively to one another as the high-frequency arc-starting spark is struck. The cathode spot and arc are immediately established on the core without wandering up the electrode. A stable cathode spot and arc may be started under opencircuit voltages of 21 volts D.C. in a shielding atmosphere of argon, or of 55 volts with helium. When welding thin metal stock and using a copper electrode with a core of thoria, a steady arc is established with 0.20 amp. D.C.
