Abstract
849,251. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Aug. 19, 1958 [Aug. 22, 1957], No. 26533/57. Class 83 (4). In submerged arc welding alloy steel in which the current contact means is spaced at least two inches from the electrode tip to utilize the resistance heating effect of the welding current, the electrode is in the form of a tubular metallic sheath enclosing a core of finely-divided deoxidizing and alloying material. The core may also contain an arc stabilizing material, e.g. potassium or titanium compound such as potassium oxalate. A.C. or D.C. of at least 50,000 amps. per square inch of electrode cross-section is used. An electrode for welding low alloy manganese steel has a mild steel sheath and a core of ferro-manganese. An electrode for welding austenitic manganese steel has a mild steel sheath cored with a mixture of 40 parts iron powder and 60 parts high carbon ferro-manganese. The electrode contact means may have a tubular extension for guiding the electrode either made of an insulating material or insulated from the contact means. Suitable materials for the guide are aluminous porcelain, zirconia, sillimanite, mullite, silicon nitride or heat-resisting alloys. The work may be preheated by a non-consumable or consumable electrode. A plurality of tubular electrodes utilizing resistance heating may be used. Two or more electrodes may be so arranged that the magnetic effect of the welding currents tends to restrict the area of molten metal.
