Abstract

689,903. Racket-presses. (FOLDING, E. March, 20, 1951. [Dec. 20, 1949] No. 32053/,19. Class 132 (ii). A racket press comprises two frames 1, 2 connected at each side of a link 4 pivoted to the frame 1 at 7 and to a bracket 3, carried rigidly by the frame 2, at 8, an extension 12 of the bracket carrying pivotally at 13 the ends of a rod 14 having a handle 15 and end cranked parts 16 which, when the handle is operated, press on a plate 17 to force the frames together, resilience being provided solely by the brackets 3, 12 which are made of springy material and are fixed when the press is closed. The plate 17 is mounted in a housing 19 on the frame 1 and has a raised part 18 which is slid into co-operation with the rod 14 when a thin racket is in the press, the plate 17 having lugs 22 accessible by slots 21 in the housing 19 to effect the sliding. The housing 19 has cut-away parts 23 which co-operate with the crank 16 to open the press when the handle is swung to release position. The frame 2 carries a combined racket-toe protector and stop 24. In a modification (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), each frame is of oval shape with diagonal members at the intersection of which is mounted a hinge-lidded box for e.g. a powder compact. The frame is of T-section metal and the connecting links and clamping mechanisms are mounted on either the inner or the outer flanges of the T. According to the Provisional Specification, the press may be automatically closed upon insertion of a racket which, upon insertion, moves a member connected to the pressure-applying cranks so as to rotate them.
