Abstract
689,587. Bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 21, 1950 [July 2, 1949], No. 15449/50. Class 12 (i). A connecting rod 1, with side surfaces 5, has a groove 7 into which fits a bearing brass or insert 23 retained in position under stress by side walls 11 which are undercut so that they converge at an angle greater than that of the converging radial side surfaces 5. The brass 23 is slightly larger than the groove 7 into which it fits; it is inserted longitudinally of the groove after relative expansion of the connecting rod 1 by heating, or contraction of itself by cooling, or both. A bearing alloy 25 is bonded to the brass 23. Clearance slots 13 are formed at the junction of the side walls 11 with the groove 7, and grooves 15 extend to the central portions of the end surfaces. Passages 17, 19, 21 lead from the grooves 15 to the piston pin bearing and are supplied with oil under pressure from a passage in the engine crankshaft through radial holes in the end of the crank-pin (not shown). Slots 27 in the brass 23 form thin walled portions projecting into the oil grooves 15, and are hammered over to position the brass axially. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 633,934.
