Abstract
688,678. Screw-cutting attachments. RAYMOND, H. F. Nov. 22, 1951, No. 27379/51. Class 83 (iii). A releasing tap and die holder comprises a carrier 6 having diametrically-opposite holes each housing a square-section dog 23, bevelled at each end, a tool-holder 16 journalled in the carrier and formed with diametrically-opposite teeth 21 to engage the dogs 23, and an axiallyslidable collar 29 bevelled to press the dogs inwardly and bored to retain the dogs in their innermost positions. The dogs are operable for right- or left-hand threads. In operation in an automatic screw-threading machine, the tool-holder is rotated at a speed less than that of the work. When the thread has been cut, a trip-rod 33 withdraws the collar 29, thus releasing the tool to turn with the work. The rotational speed of the tool is then increased and a roll-clutch 41 again locks the holder to the carrier, causing the tool to be withdrawn.
