Abstract

687,941. Fishing reels. BIRCHALL, T. Dec. 14, 1950 [Dec. 14, 19491, No. 32021/49. Class 48. In a non-rotary spool type fishing reel the spool 34 is caused to tilt or wobble continuously on rotation of the flier 20, to effect a criss - cross progressive winding of the line, by means of a single ball 27 located between the rotary flier and the non- rotary spool and radially offset from their axes. As shown the flier 20 is driven by bevel gears 11, 12 and has a central boss 21 carrying one race 23 for the single ball 27, and the spool 34 is clamped on a sleeve 25 having a flange 26 forming the other race or track for the ball 27. The sleeve 25 is slidably keyed for tilting movement on a non-rotatable shaft 22, a spring 39 on the shaft 22 urging the fixed ball-track 26 towards the rotary race 23. A cap 38 screwed onto the end of sleeve 25 lightly clamps, in an adjustable manner, the spool 34 on the sleeve so as to allow the spool to rotate on the sleeve 25 under line strain, an audible clicker arrangement 35, 37 being provided. In operation rotation of the flier 20 with the race 23 rolls the ball 27 around track 26 causing the spool 34 to wobble continuously to effect a criss-cross winding of the line, an even progressive winding being obtained due to the slight slip of the ball during its rolling movement.
