Abstract

317,881. Holland, H. G. May 24, 1928. Feeding and winding webs. - Apparatus for supporting paper or other reels during winding or unwinding comprises two centre pieces to engage the reel bore, one centre piece being axially adjustable in a carrier which is rotatably mounted in a supporting head and provided with a friction driving gear, means being provided to adjust the friction of the drive. One end of the reel 11 is supported on a conical centre piece 12 having a. spindle portion 14 rotatably mounted in a screw 15 which is threaded in a fixed support 18 and provided with a handle 19 by which the centre piece may be engaged with or disengaged from the reel. A screw 20 is provided to lock the screw 15 after adjustment, and a roller bearing 16 and ball thrust bearing 17 for the spindle 14 are also provided. A brake band 34 adjustable by a Bowden wire 36 is mounted on the piece 12 and is movable therewith on an extension of the support 18. The opposite end of the reel is mounted on a centre piece 13 rigid with a screw 21 threaded in a sleeve. 20 rotatable in a fixed support 23. The screw 21 is axially adjustable by a handle 32 after the release of a lccking nut 22. A driving device for the centre piece 13 comprises a gear 24 on the sleeve 20 engaging a gear 25 loose on a shaft 26 and adapted to be connected by a friction clutch to a driven chain wheel 27. The friction of the clutch is adjustable by a handwheel 28 through a spring 29 and thrust bearing 30. In a modification of the driving device, a driving pulley is mounted loosely on the screw 21 and is connected bv a friction clutch directly with the sleeve 20. The centre pieces may be provided with ribs 33 and also with rectangular recesses 50 to receive spindles on which small reels are wound.
