The flanges of a cable drum 3 rest on rollers having horizontal and parallel axes, one roller 1 being rotated by means such as an electric motor 8 driving pulleys 6, 7 connected by a belt 5 and being mounted in a fixed portion of a frame 4 which may be accommodated in a pit, and the other roller 2 being mounted in a movable portion of the frame, e.g. arms 9 rotatable about fulcra 10, the arms being moved to bring the roller 2 into a desired position in relation to the roller 1 by means such as hydraulic piston-cylinder. units 11 the liquid to which is controlled by a manually-operated valve 13 connected to a powerdriven pump. There may be adjustable and rotatable rollers 14 to provide endwise guidance to the drum. In a modification, the arms are operated by a power or manually-driven screw-and-nut mechanism.
