Abstract

735,931. Automatic control systems. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1951 [Dec. 1, 1950], No. 29499/50. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for effecting a continuous two-stage process on long rigid work, e.g. a tube, rod or electric cable, has feeding means at each stage, one feeding means being mounted on a carriage movable in the line of feed against a centralizing force, and control means, operated by movement of said carriage from its central position, to adjust the rate of one of said feeding means so as to cause the carriage to move towards its central position. In the apparatus shown an insulated cable core 2, Fig. 1A, is guided by rollers 38, 39, 37 into a trough T of aluminium made from a flat strip 3 by rollers 28, 29. The trough T is closed around the core 2 by a die 31 to form a tube 4 and the seam is welded by a torch 32. The work is fed by two endless belts 40 driven by a motor 7. All this apparatus, except the rollers 37 ... 39, is carried by a frame 13 suspended by arms 17 and flat springs 18, 19 from a fixed frame 16 so as to be free to swing in the axial direction of the tube 4. This is pulled through a die 5 to reduce its diameter by drum 8, Fig. 1B, driven by a motor 9 through variablespeed gearing 10 adjustable by a motor 11. If the means 40 feeds the tube 4 at a rate greater or less than it is drawn through the die 5 the frame 13 is moved to the right or left and closes one or other of two switches to drive the motor 11 in the direction to cause the drum 8 to rotate more or less rapidly as the case may be. Excessive movement of the frame 13 operates switches to bring the whole to rest. The frame 13 may be supported in other ways and have means for locking it when required. Other feeding and speed controlling means may also be used.
