Class 46 In a filter cartridge comprising a pile of filter discs in which the even' and uneven .discs are clamped in pairs alternately by. outer and inner edges between outer and inner perforated spacer rings, each spacer ring, embodies two divergent elastically - yieldablelateral flanges symmetrical about the plane perpendicular. to the axis of the ring and directed towards the outside in the case of the outer ring and towards the inside in the case of the inner ring. A preferred shape for an inner ring is shown in Fig. 2; an outer ring has the same cross-section with the annuli directed outwardly. The discs and rings are compressed axially between annular end plates 7 and 8, Fig. 1, engaged behind in-turned and out-turned edges respectively of perforated cylinders 6 and 5 respectively and serving also to retain the pile of discs and rings in radial alignment. An out-turned edge 21 is provided on each face of each ring which edge penetrates into the material of the contiguous filter disc 1 &c. to ensure fluid-tightness. When the pile is assembled as in Fig. 1 the annuli of each ring are forced towards each other and by their resilience ensure fluid tightness between the contacting edges of each pair of discs. Further, by this movement of the annuli the diameter of the circular edges 21 of each inner ring becomes smaller and that of the corresponding edges of each outer ring becomes larger. Since these edges engage the discs 1 &c. the latter are automatically tensioned radially when the pile is assembled and compressed. Fig. 4 shows an alternate shape for the flanges.
