Abstract

687,428. Engine' stop-gear. QUA L C R A F T GENERAL ENGINEERING PRODUCTS, Ltd., and WILLIAMS, E. B. May 25, 1951 [July 5, 1950], No. 16790/50. Class 122(iv) [Also in Group XXIX] A combined engine stop gear and signalling apparatus comprising a main stop valve 10a and an auxiliary signal-operating valve 22 both loaded towards the closed position at least partly by spring pressure or fluid pressure has control mechanism adapted to be operated in two stages, the first of which releases the main valve to allow it to close and the second of which opens the signal operating valve. The invention is particularly applicable to the stoppage of machinery such as conveyors in coal mines. A passage 11 in the housing 10 leads steam or compressed air to the engine or machinery to be controlled. The main valve 10a is opened against the combined action of the fluid pressure and a spring by a lever 15 engaging the head 13a of the valve stem 13. The lever 15 is normally maintained in the depressed position shown by the engagement of a transverse pin 19 with notches 21 in a double lever 20. The lever 20 carries a projection 20a adapted to open the signal-operating valve 22 against the pressure in the passage 11 and a spring 24 surrounding the valve stem 23. The lever 20 also carries a projection 20b to which is attached a lanyard 28 or other control means for operating the valves from a distance. The valve 22 supplies pressure to operate a whistle 25. The complete apparatus has a cover 30. In a modification the valve stem 23 is arranged coaxially inside the whistle and projects through it. In another modification, the support 17 for the lever 15 is formed as a clamp which embraces the hexagonal end of the valve 10a aand the lever 20 is pivoted on a bracket clamped to the neck 10d of the valve 10a.
