Abstract

Liquid polymerizable substances having the formula A-C-B, where C is a di- or polyhydroxy organic acid having hydrogen atoms of its hydroxy groups replaced by residues A and B of polymerizable organic acids to give ester linkages may be polymerized at room temperature in the presence of a suitable catalyst, preferably sulphinic acid. The polymerizable substance may be glycerophosphoric acid dimethacrylate or a mixture of gluconic acid di- and tri-methacrylates, and may be used as an adhesive, particularly in dentistry.ALSO:Relates to liquid unsaturated esters having the formula A-C-B, where C is a di- or polyhydroxy organic acid having hydrogen atoms of its hydroxy groups replaced by residues A and B of polymerizable organic acids to give ester linkages. In examples: (1) glycerophosphoric acid dimethacrylate is prepared by reacting sodium glycerophosphate with methacrylochloride and acidifying; (2) a mixture of gluconic acid di- and tri-methacrylates is prepared by reacting sodium gluconate with methacrylochloride and acidifying.
