In apparatus for emptying containers of the kind consisting of an endless belt or chain conveyer which delivers the containers to means for up-ending them over a reservoir or the like, a driven roller is provided at the delivery end of the conveyer which roller is arranged with a portion of its circumference upstanding from the outer surface of the conveyer belt or chain so as positively to traverse each container off the end of the conveyer against a stop arranged to cause the container to tilt. As shown milk churns are conveyed by a pair of endless chains 22, mounted at one end of their travel on sprockets 21 and guided by angle irons 24, 25, to a tipping device, at which the churns are traversed off the conveyer by a pair of pulleys 23, of larger diameter than the sprockets 21 and by the shaft 18 of the sprockets 21. The churns fall against a stop 36 curved to the shape of the churns and the middle part of each churn as it arrives at the stop 36 engages and depresses a roller 30 also curved to the shape of the churns and carried by counterweighted arms 27 pivotally mounted at 26 and constrained to move between stops 34. The churn continues to fall until the mouth is arrested by a grill 37 through which the milk flows to a reservoir (not shown). As the milk is discharged roller 30 rises owing to the lightening of the churn and pushes the churn to a fully inverted position, arms 27 thus returning to their original position ready for the next churn.
