686,724. Internal shoe-drum brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 11, 1951 [Jan. 12, 1950], No. 836/51. Class 103 (i). In an internal shoe-drum brake of the " non- servo " type in which both shoes 18 and 20 engage a fixed anchor plate 36 riveted or otherwise secured to the back plate 12, different wedging angles, defined by the angle ALK in Fig. 5 are given to the shoe-engaging surfaces 39 and 40. By using such a brake in vehicles with a normal forward rotation indicated by the arrow F and by providing a smaller wedge angle at the surface 40, a greater braking effect will be produced when the vehicle is in reverse. The brake shoes 18 and 20 may be made identical except for the location of the lining on the shoe rims and similar brakes may be fitted on the left- or right-hand simply by reversing the position of the plate 36 as shown in Fig. 4.
