Abstract
686,103. Feeding sheets. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Aug. 31, 1950 [Sept. 16, 1949], No. 23866/49. Class 100 (i). Sheet - separators. - Collapsed cartons 12 stacked vertically on edge in a magazine 11 are separated from the stack by a suction head 13 which first moves substantially perpendicularly to the plane of the end carton to pull away the front edge, against the action of a spring-urged finger 39, and then moves substantially at right angles to pull the carton away from a fixed stop 41 and out of the magazine. A number of suction heads 13 having metal-faced suckers 27 therein are arranged around a rotatable central shaft 18, and comprise hollow arms 14 rotatablymounted in spider arms 16 fixed to the shaft 18 which is intermittently-rotated by a shaft 26 through a Geneva mechanism. Suction is applied to the suckers 27 through the arms 14 which are supported by a plate 29 over a fixed suction chamber 28. An inner wall 31 of the chamber 28 acts to cut-off the suction at a predetermined point. At their upper ends, the arms 14 have extensions 32 provided with rollers 33 engaging a cam groove 34 in a cam plate 36 freely mounted on the shaft 18 and arranged to be oscillated by a link 37 eccentrically-mounted on the shaft 26. When the shaft 18 is rotated, the leading approaching arm 14 is rocked inwardly by the cam 36 to clear the end carton 12, and then rocked outwardly to engage the carton. The shaft 18 now stops, the arm 14 is moved inwardly to withdraw the leading edge of the carton away from the stack, the shaft 18 is then rotated whereby the arm 14 moves substantially transversely of the stack to withdraw the carton from the stack against the action of the fixed stop 41, and carries it to a position where, on further outward movement of the arm 14, the leading edge passes into a recess 42 on a projection 43 from a guide rail 44. The shaft 18 again stops, the cam 36 causes the arm 14 to rock inwardly so that the carton is opened by an abutment 46 on the projection 43, and on further rotation of the shaft 18, the carton is collapsed in the opposite direction, assisted by a stop 47 on the arm 14, and led between the guide rails 44 where it is released by the suckers 27. A projection 48 on a chain conveyer 49 then feeds the carton forward to a carton-filling machine. When the suckers 27 engage the carton in the stack, they lie rearwardly of a score line on the carton which acts as an abutment for the suckers during separation of the carton from the stack. Specification 686,105, [Group XVII], is referred to.
