Abstract

485,468. Filling - machines. ROSE, A. G., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Nov. 19, 1936, No. 31668. [Class 94 (i)] The machine sets up cartons of the type shown in Fig. 6, from a collapsed condition. Initially, the sides 11, 14, with their flaps 15, 18 and 19, 22 are in the same plane and flat against the other sides and flaps. The cartons are fed in a pile with their lower edges, i.e. the flaps 19 .. 22 on conveyer belts 26, Fig. 1, until the foremost carton is arrested by stops 28, 29, Figs. 1 and 4. The stop 28 comprises a roller which contacts with the side 14, and the stop 29 comprises fingers which, in their forward position, engage the side 11. A suction gripper 30 engages the flap 15 and is rotated about a longitudinal axis 32 to open the flap as shown. A blade 40 now descends and enters the body of the carton to lie behind the side 11. The suction gripper is disengaged by breaking the vacuum, and is moved out of the path of the cartons about a vertical axis 36. The blade 40 is one of a series of four mounted for intermittent rotation about a shaft 43. Slots 45, 47 are engaged by pins 44, 46 on spider arms 42, 41, and the vertical movement of each blade into and out of the carton is effected by chains 49, 50 carrying claws 51 which engage with roller pins 52 on the slides. The chains move intermittently during the pauses in the rotation of the spider arms 41, 42 and position the claws 51 in the engaging positions shown. The roller pins 52 pass round fixed guide rails 53, 54, gapped where necessary, into engagement, and the chains move the right hand blade 40, Fig 1, downwards into the carton, and the left hand blade upwards out of a preceding carton so that its roller pin 52, at the next movement of rotation, passes on to the rail 53. During the two periods of rotation, each of 90‹, between these stations, the carton is opened as shown in Fig. 3, in which successive positions are shown in broken lines. An initial opening movement is caused by the retarding effect of the roller 28 on the side 14, which is later forced into rectangular position by an abutment roller 69. The stop 29 is moved away to allow the carton to pass, and back again to engage the next one. The set up carton is conveyed away to closing and filling apparatus.
