Abstract

686,086. Mop cleaning appliances mops; handles. EDWIN CORPORATION. May 15, 1951 [May 15, 1950], No. 11376/51. Classes 19 and 61 (i). [Also in Group I] A cleaning appliance for a dust mop comprises an enclosure containing a foot-operated beater and is adapted to support the mop when the mop-head is inserted into it. The top 7 of the enclosure (Figs. 1, 2, 5) is provided with a depression 8 having, a raised central rib 9 and extending from an end wall 3 in which is an outwardly-opening door 12. The door is hinged about its lower edge and held shut by a torsion spring 14, a foot pedal 15 being provided for opening. A mop (Fig. 9) for use with the appliance comprises cords 19 secured at one end to a fabric sheet 20, which is attached by the edges to an upper sheet 21: a gap 22 at one edge allows of the insertion of a spring wire supporting frame 24. The frame includes portions 27 bent so as to lie over the sheet 21, the ends 28 being turned inwards and sprung into a sleeve 29 attached to the handle 23, so as to form a pivot: the wires 27 drop into depressions, Fig. 12 (not shown), in the sleeve 29 when the handle 23 is upright and then lock the mop head in position. By turning the handle to a horizontal position the mop head may be inserted in the appliance, via the door 12 (Figs. 1, 2, 5), the sleeve 29 being cut away at one side 32 so that it will slide over the rib 9. When the mop head is fully within the enclosure the sleeve 29 lies over a depression 10 in the top 7 and the handle 23 may be swung to a vertical position so as to lock the mop in place. The upper end of the enclosure contains a guide in the form of a fixed, U-shaped wire 33 which forces the mop cords downwards into the path of the beater 70. The beater comprises a rod 70 carried by a pair of arms 69 (Fig. 5), the lower ends of which are attached to a cross-bar 45, constrained to move horizontally in a box-shaped guide 40 which extends across the base of the enclosure. The cross-bar 45 is attached to a curved link 58 passing through the wall 4, being guided by a roller 55; a foot pedal 61 is pivoted to the top of the link 58, depression of which causes the cross-bar 45 to be driven across the enclosure. The return stroke is effected by a spring 49. On the forward stroke, outwardly turned lugs 83 on the arms 69 engage corresponding lugs 78 attached to a stop .member 73, so that the beater 70 is prevented from moving across the enclosure until it has risen sufficiently for the lugs to disengage; the tension in spring 72 then causes a rapid beating action to occur. The beating stroke is terminated by the beater striking the opposite stop member 76. On the return stroke of the cross-bar 45 further lugs 82 on the arms 69 engage lugs on the stop member 76, so that a similar, rapid return beating stroke is obtained upon release of the spring 72.
