Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blackboard-Eraser Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to im rovements in what may be termed blac board eraser cleaners.

Objects of my invention are to provide for readily and effectively cleaning, as noted, erasers for blackboards and to accomplish that end in a simple, economic and expeditious manner, and it therefore consists of certain features or instrumentalities substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and pointed out by the claims.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the contrivanoe. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the same produced through the beater or cleaner proper. Fig. 5 is also a vertical longitudinal section taken alongside of the blackboard cleaner ejector or pusher, more particularly viewing the latter. Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 6-6 Fig. 3 looking in the direction of arrow.

In the disclosure of my invention, I provide a suitable closed receptacle or chamber 1 for receiving and containing the chalk-dust as the latter is eliminated by the beating action from the blackboard cleaner, as will more fully presently appear, said receptacle having a suitably hinged end-section 2, to allow, by opening the same, for the ready removal of the accumulation of such chalk dust. Said hinged section is provided with a sliding latch 3 suitably applied to its inside for vertical movement, and controlled by a knob 4 arranged upon the outside of said hinged section, suitable connection being effected between said sliding latch and said knob, by suitable means, passing througha vertical slot 5 in said end-section, the lower or effective beveled end of said latch being adapted to enter or engage a notch 6 in the receptacle bottom, when said knob is pushed I downward. Within said receptacle 1 is suitably positioned in a vertical position a beater or cleaner proper 7 consisting preferably of a series of closely arranged tongues or fingers 8 formed at their lower ends preferably integral with a solid portion or piece 9 suitably secured to a rock or pivoting bar 10, with its pivots bearing in opposed brackets or cleats 11 secured to the inner surface of said receptacle. Said beater or cleaner proper is held in initial position by the action of spring-wire rods 12 with their lower ends suitably fixed in place and linked or flexibly connected as at 13 with any suitable number of the fingers or tongues 8.

To the pivoting or rock bar 10 is fixed an outstanding arm 14 with its free end opposed to an upright or post 15 fixed to a base piece in turn fixed to the receptacle bottom, as a convenient Way of securing said post in place. Arranged. alongside of said outstanding arm 14 is a shaft 16 suitably j ournaled in one side of the receptacle 1 and upright pieces or supports 17, 18, suitably fixed to a base-piece 19 secured to the receptacle bottom. Said shaft, adapted to be operated by a crankhandle 20 fixed to its outer end, from the outside of said receptacle, is equipped with a number or plurality of radial arms or spokes 21 effective as said shaft is actuated by suitably turning said handle, to engage said arm 14 and thus provide for operating the beater or cleaner 7.

In order to prevent reverse movement of said shaft, which, of course, would result in the impairment or breaking of the parts, a drop-dog or latch 22 is suitably pivoted at one end in one of the upright pieces 17, 18, while its opposite end rests in a slot or notch 23 in the upper end of the other of said upright pieces and projects in the plane of the movement or rotation of the arms or spokes 21 and is adapted to swing upward as said spokes move or turn from right to left as said s aft is accordingly operated. Said end of the latch 22 is beveled or reduced upon its lower edge to allow the spokes 21 to readily escape the same as the shaft carrying said spokes or arms is turned from right to left, and thus in that case not interfere with the actuation of the latter.

A suitable trough-like shelf 24 is erected upon the inside of the receptacle 1, with its bottom bar extended as at a, in front of the fingers of the heater or cleaner 7, whereby the blackboard cleaner placed upon said extended bottom-bar a may be exposed or subjected to the beating or whipping action of said fingers or beaters, by simply actuating the crank-handle 20 of the crank-shaft 16 as will be readily apparent. A suitable upstanding spring wire rod 1) is fixed at its lower endto the inside of the receptacle with its upper portion adapted to hold the blackboard eraser in place upon the shelf or trough extension as said eraser is being cleaned or subjected to the beating action of the cleaner fin ers.

n alinement with the supporting extension a of the trough or shelf 24, is formed an opening 25 in one end of the receptacle 1 for the convenient delivery therethrough of said eraser after cleaning, said opening, however, being kept closed by an upward-lifting closure 26 hinged to the outside of said receptaole and initially standing in an outwardly and downwardly inclined position, its lower edge resting upon a correspondingly inclined ledge or offset 27 secured between cleats or brackets 28 also secured to the outside of said receptacle, upon opposite sides of said opening.

A plunger or pusher 29 preferably an oblong or rectangular bar with its forward end somewhat reduced, is arranged to slide in the trough or shelf 24, and is controlled by a handle or knob 25 arranged for manipulation upon the top portion 30 of the receptacle 1, the means of connection for said knob with said plunger extending through an elongated slot 31 in said top portion for permitting the requisite movement of said plunger as said knob is grasped and actuated. Said top portion 30 is provided with a trap-door or wicket 32 for conveniently placing the blackboard eraser into said receptacle in place upon the extension (1 of the trough 24, when the same is to be cleaned. It w1ll be noted, however, that, after the cleaning of said blackboard eraser 'by simply grasping and requisitely moving the knob 25, the pusher or ejector 29 may be so actuated as to readily eject or deliver said eraser cleaned, out through the opening 25, Where it may be readily removed by the hand as will be appreciated.

I claim 1. A device as described, comprising a receptacle, a beater arranged therein, means 1 for the retention in place of a blackboard eraser for its treatment by the action of said beater, a plunger adapted to effect the release of said eraser from its retaining means and having means for its actuation, said reoeptacle having in its top portion an elongated slot through which extends the'connecting means between said .plunger and said plunger actuating means, and means for actuating said beater.

2. A device as described, comprising a receptacle, a spring actuated beater located therein, a shelf with its bottom portion extending in front of said beater for the support of a blackboard eraser for treatment by the action of said beater, said receptacle having an opening alining said shelf bottom portion or extension, and a plunger arranged for movement in said shelf and effective for ejecting said blackboard eraser through said opening, and means for actuating said beater.

3. A blackboard eraser cleaner comprising a suitable receptacle having a ledge adapted to receive an eraser and provided with an inlet and outlet, one over the ledge to receive the eraser, and one in alinement with the ledge for its ejection from the receptacle, and a beater comprising a comb-shaped pivotally supported device, and means for imparting vibrations to said beater.

4. A blackboard eraser cleaner com risin a suitable receptacle having a ledge a apte to receive an eraser and provided with an inlet and outlet, one over the ledge to receive the eraser, and one in alinement with the ledge for its ejection from the receptacle, a beater comprising a comb-shaped pivotally supported device, means for imparting vibrations to said beater, and means for preventing a reverse motion to said actuated means.
