Hinged handles.-A mop with a hinged handle has an extension on the lower end of the handle adapted to engage with a bearing member located adjacent a wringing surface. The socket 3 carrying the handle 4 is pivoted at 5 to the body 1 carrying the mop 2 and terminates in an open frame 7 coacting with the body 1 to limit the upward movement of the handle, the latter being locked in raised position by a stop 9 on a spring 8, which stop has an inclined front face 10 and an under ledge 9<1> adapted to engage with the upper edge) 7<1> of the frame 7. The receptacle 15 carries a mop wringing perforated tray 16 and a projection or bearing member 14 under which the end of the frame 7 may be engaged for squeezing out the mop by downward pressure on the handle when the frame 7 is released from the stop 9, which release is effected automatically on engagement of the frame with the projection 14 by contact of the projection with the upper end of stop 9. In the modification, Fig. 3, the handle lock comprises an arcuate gravity catch lever 10 pivoted at 11 to an extension of one of the pivot lugs 6 and having a notch 12 adapted to engage a pin 13 on the handle; the catch lever 10 is released by the projection 14 when the tongue member 7 is engaged therewith. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the catch 16 is pivoted on a pin 17 in an open frame extension 7 of the handle socket 3 and has downward extensions 18 with hooks 19 adapted to engage under a ledge 20 by the action of a spring 23 secured to the underside of the catch 16, which is released by contact with the projection 14.
