siding at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Appliances for Applying and Removing Garment-Bags, of which the following is a. specification,

My invention relates to an apparatus for applying and removing the bags used to protect laundried or dry cleaned garments.

The object of my invention is to facilitate the handling of garment protecting paper bags such as are commonly used in laundries and dry cleaning establishments so that they can be readily applied to the garment or removed from the garment when it is neces and slipped with it up or down on the rod until the bags bottom end stands slightly above the arment hanger.

It is a urther object of my invention to adapt the bag carrying slide to frictionally engage the'rod so that it will stand at any height to which it may be adjusted so as to supportthe bag in the most convenient pos1t1on.

A further object is to provide the rod with a stop which will arrest the bag carrying slide at the limit of its downward movement, so that a continued pull on the bag will serve to disengage it from the slide 0111) and per: mit it to be drawn down into position over the garment with the garment hanger hook proecting through its top opening.

y invention also comprises the novel details of construction and arrangements of parts, which in their preferred embodiments only are illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification, andin which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my appliance showing the bag in full lines in elevated position and in dotted lines eoveringa garment.

As illustrated, my invention comprises a hanger rod 1, preferably formed of a rectangular bar having at its lower end a hook 2 and adjacent to the hookya stop notch 3. This rod at its upper end, is reduced and threaded so as to be screwed into a ceiling plate 4 attached by screws ;or in any other suitable manner to the ceiling or any suitable overhead support. Mounted to slide on the rod is a slide 6 having a rectangular opening extendin vertically therethrough which fits three si es of the square hanger rod snugly but is spaced from the fourth side which has the notch 3 so as to leave a spring wardly through an opening 10 in the slide,

' housing 7 therein in which is mounted a flat I casing and has its outer end engaged and pressed inwardly by the free end of a flat" spring 11 which is made fast at one end by a screw 12 to a boss 13 on the slide and which is intermediately perforated for the passage of a screw 14 which is screwed into the slide and which has threaded thereon a wing nut 15 which by. engaging the spring 11' nearest its center will control the pressure exerted thereby through the pin 9 onto the friction spring 8. The slide at'one side is provided with a pair of perforated cars 16 between which is pivotally mounted a bag (lip 17 having its bag engaging surface 18 serrated or roughened and pressed against theslide by the action of'a coil spring 19 working b e pulley housing 23 suitably connected on or' near the top of the rod. The cord thence passes about a second pulley 24 made fast to the ceiling or overhead support and has a handle 25 at its free end which hangs suf- -ficiently spaced from the rod to clear the widest bag.

In operation, the wing nut isadjusted to cause the spring 8 to frictionally grip the rod and hold the slide thereon in any position towhich it may be set while supporting the heaviest type of paper bag 26. This bag, which is typical of any bag generally used in the laundr and dry cleaning business, is provided with a top opening through which the hook end 2 of the rod 1 is passed and the bag is slipped up over the rounded bottom end 27--of the slide and is caught at one side under the clip 17, thereupon the handle 25 is grasped and the bag carryin slide drawn up until the bottom end of t e bag will clear the hook 2. Thereupon the garment 28 to be placed in the bag is mounted on any suitable type of hanger 29 and the hook 30 of the latter is hung on the hook 2 of the rod. The operator then grasps the open bottom end of the bag and pulls it down over the garment, the bag carrying slide being drawn downwardly therewith along'the rod until the lower end of the spring 8 snaps into the notch 3 which arrests the slide, whereupon a continued pull on the ba will-disengage it from the-clip 17 and enable it to be drawn down overthe garment hanger exposing the hook 30 of the latter and completing the bagging operation. To remove the bag from a gare ment for inspection or for any other reason, the garment with the bag thereon is hung from the hook 2, the bag is raised and caused to engage under the clip 17 and then the handle 25 is grasped and the slide raised until the garment is exposed. The rod is made long enough to accommodate the longed type of bag but it is equally available for the shortbags as the 0 draws up the bag carrying slide far enough to expose the garment or the hook 2. i

The type of slide which I have shown is that which I consider preferable, but its construction may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. In like manner other types of hanger rods may be substituted for the preferred form illustrated.

This invention is not "intended to be restricted in scope to the specific embodiments shown, but comprises such modifications as perator merely notched face of the bar,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letand having means to frictionally engage the rod and hold the slide thereon in any desired position, bag engaging means carried by said slide, and means to move the slide on the rod.
