My invention relates to apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over agarment.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide apparatus of this character which 6 will be self-contained.
A further object is to provide apparatus of this character'which will avoid the disadvantages of apparatus now in use for this purpose. v
A further object is to provide apparatus of this character in which a counterweight is employed for drawing the bag up over the guide in position to be drawn down over the garment.
A further object is to provide such a construction in which the slide and counter- Weight are housed and guided in a tubular member.
Further objects will appear from the description and claims.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the construction shown comprises a vertical tubular guide member 1 suspended from the ceiling by a ring 2, aguide member 3 shaped some- 35 thing like a spear head secured at the lower end of the tubular guide to facilitate slipping the open upper end of the bag 4; up on tothe guide 1, a bag-holding clasp 5 or gripper to which the upper edge of the bag may substantially on the line be secured a slide6 on which this gripper 5 is mounted slidable vertically in a channel 7 in the guide 1,' a cord 8 secured to said slide 6, a pulley 9 mounted in the upper end of the tubular guide 1 over which this cord 8 passes ganda counterweight 10 secured to the other end of the cord 8 for raising the bag 4.and drawing it up over the tubular guide 1 when the latch 11 is released.
In use, the coat hanger 12 is removed from the hook 13 onthe spear-shaped guide 3, the
opening in the bag 4 is spread to enable it to he slipped up over the spear-head guide 3, the upper edge of the bag is clasped underneath the gripper 5, and the latch 11 is swung to release it from the bayonet notch 1-1 whereupon the counterweight 10 will descend. raising the slide 6 and gripper 5 and drawing the bag up to the upper position shown in Fig. 1.
The garment hanger 12 supporting the garment is then secured in place on the hook projection 13 and the :bag 4 is'then pulled down over the garment hanger 12 and the garment until the latch 11 snaps back again into the bayonet notch 14. The gripper member 5 is then released to free the upper edge of the bag 4 which is then slipped down further into position resting on the garment hanger 12 and the garment hanger with'the garment and the enclosing bag can then be removed from the hook 13.
The tubular guidemay be made in any suitablemanner and of any suitable material such as extruded aluminum or formed sheet metal. The spear-head guide may conveniently be formed as a metal casting having a screw plug 15 threaded into the lower end of the tubular guide 1. The support at the upper end of the guide may be formed as a cast ing having a screw cap 16 threaded over the upper end of the tubular guide, and having a supporting ring 2 for engagement with a ring or hook17 secured to the ceiling. The slide 6 may be shaped to slide freely in the channel in the tubular member and may be provided with a tongue 18 projecting into the 1 vertical slot 19 in the guide 1 to provide a connection for'the base 20 of the clamping or gripping member 5. ,The latch 11 may be formed as a pivoted member provided with a coil tension spring 21 which acts to draw the latch into the bayonet notch 14 when in registration therewith. The pulley 9 may be mounted on a pin 22 or shaft mounted in openings in the upper end of the tubular member 1. A slot 23 may be provided in the tubular guide 1 to permit access to the counterweight 10 in case it should stick.
Itis sometimes desirable to use a single bag to cover the garments on two hangers and for this purpose 1 may provide two hook port-ions 13 on the spear-shaped "'uide so that a coat hanger may be suspended from each one of these.
I claim:
1. Apiaratus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bagholding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, mounted to freely slide up and down said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidably mounted with respect to said guide member and guided thereby for automatically raising said bagholding device along said guide.
2. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bagholding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, mounted to freely slide up and down said guide amlguided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidably mounted with respect to said guide member and guided thereby, said guide member having a guide channel for guiding said bag-supporting member for automatically raising said bagholding device along said guide.
3. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over 'a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bagholding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, slidably mounted with respec'tto said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidably mounted with respect to said guide member and guided thereby, said guide member having a guide channel for guiding said counterweight.
4. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a "lower free'end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may he slipped up over said guide member, a bag-holding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, slidably mounted with respect to said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bagholding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidably mounted with respect to said guide member and guided thereby, said guide member having a guide channel for guiding said bag-supporting member, and. another channel for guiding said counterweight.
5. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bagholding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, slidably mounted with respect to said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible mem ber passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidably mounted with respect to said uide member and guided thereby, and a releasable latch for holding said bag-supporting member against the action of said counterweight.
6. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated tubular guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support, and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide,
a slide slidably mounted in said tubular member, a bag-holding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured slidably mounted with respect to said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidable in said tubular guide.
7. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated tubular guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support, and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide, a slide slidably mounted in said tubular memher, a bag-holding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured slidably,
mounted with respect to said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes, and a counterweight secured to said flexible member and slidable in said tubular guide, said tubular guide having a slot therein to permit access tosaid counterweight to free it in case it sticks.
8. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated tubular guide having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide, a slide slidably mounted in said tubular member, a bag-holding device secured to said slide, and counterweight mechanism connected to said slide and positioned within said guide member for automatically raising said slide along said guide member.

Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing itto a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bag-holding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, slidably mounted with respect to said guide and guided thereby, a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, and a tension mechanism-exerting an upward force on said flexible member to raise the bag-holding device and bag carried thereby when released by the ope 'ator.
10. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member, having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bagholding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, mounted to freely slide along said guide and guided thereby, tensioning means connected to said bag-holding device tending to maintain the same adjacent the upper end of said guide member whereby when said bag-holding device is released from the lower position thereof it will be automatically raised to its upper position.
11. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member, having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bagholding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, mounted to freely slide along said guide and guided thereby, locking means on said bag-holding device for association with said guide member adjacent the lower end thereof to lock the bag-holding device in lower position, and tensioning means connected to said slide tending to maintain said slide adjacent the upper end of said guide member, whereby when the means for locking the bag-holding device in lower position is released, the bag-holding device will be automatically raised to its upper position.

Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated tubular guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support, and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a bag-holding device to which the upper end of the bag may be secured, mounted to freely slide along said guide and guided thereby, tensioning means positioned within said tubular guide member and connected to said bag-holding device tending to maintain the same adjacent the upper end of said guide member whereby when said bag-holding device is released from the lower position thereof it will be automatically raised to its upper position.
13. Apparatus to facilitate placing a bag over a garment, comprising an elongated guide member having means at its upper end for securing it to a support and having a lower free end for entering the opening in the upper part of the bag, whereby the bag may be slipped up over said guide member, a
bag-holding device to which the upper end of i the bag may be secured, mounted to freely slide along said guide and guided thereby; tensioning means connected to said bag-holding device, tending to maintain the same adjacent the upper end of said guide member, comprising a flexible member secured to said bag-holding device, a pulley over which said flexible member passes and a weight secured to said flexible member and slidably mounted with respect to said guide member and guided by the same, whereby when said bag-holding device is released from the lower position thereof, it will be automatically raised to its upper position.
