Abstract

Acenaphthylene is copolymerized with compounds containing at least one <FORM:0685844/IV (a)/1> grouping in which the single linkages are attached to dissimilar radicals, other than compounds in which a heterocyclic ring containing oxygen occurs, such as styrene and acrylic and methacrylic acids and esters, by making an emulsion of the monomers in water with the aid of agitation and an ionic emulsifying agent, and heating the mixture, with or without a polymerization catalyst, until polymerization is complete. Ionic emulsifying agents specified are ammonium laurate, ammonium stearate, potassium laurate, Turkey Red oil, and high molecular weight fatty amides associated with simple organic acids. Catalysts specified are ammonium and potassium persulphates, and alkyl hydroperoxides. After separation the copolymers may be purified by solution in a solvent such as benzene, and reprecipitation with alcohol. A copolymer of acenaphthylene and styrene has a softening temperature of 110 DEG C.
