Abstract

Trimeric a -methyl p-methyl styrene is prepared by heating a mixture of the monomer, and an activated bleaching earth such as fuller's earth or floridin, at a temperature of 37-43 DEG C. The earth may be activated by heating at above 200-400 DEG C. for 2-5 hrs. The ratio by weight of monomer to catalyst is generally between 97 : 3 and 90 : 10, preferably 96 : 4 and 93 : 7. The catalyst in powder form is added slowly to the heated monomer with continuous agitation which is further continued, generally for 3-4 hrs., until reaction is complete, as shown by the index of refraction. The product is filtered and purified by distillation. It is of use as the liquid medium in thermometers and thermostats, as an electrical insulating material, and as a plasticizer for resins such as polyvinyl acetal, acrylic and dihydronaphthalene resins, cyclized rubber, benzyl and ethyl cellulose, styrene polymers and rubbery butadiene copolymers with acrylonitrile or styrene.
