Abstract

685,670. Connecting branches to mains. LOCK JOINT PIPE CO. March 28, 1951 [March 31, 1950], No. 7175/51. Class 99 (i). Means for connecting a branch to a main comprises a saddle 16 secured to the main and having a tubular extension 18, a tubular gland 34 having a grooved flange 35 carrying a gasket 36 adapted to surround an opening in the main, the gland being secured to the extension by bolts 38 so as to compress the gasket 36, and cementitious material 47 in the annular space between extension and gland. When the main comprises a concrete pipe having a tubular, steel, reinforcing shell 12, the outer concrete layer 14 and wire reinforcement 13 are cut away at 44 so that the gasket 36 seats on the steel shell. The body 40 of a valve through which the main is tapped is secured to the flange 37 of the gland, which may be lined with concrete 39. The saddle is secured to the main by straps 24 anchored to plates 20 which are welded to the saddle and supported by gussets 22. The saddle may fit closely on the main or be spaced therefrom by gaskets 29, 30, 31, the space being filled wilth cement through openings 27. Air holes 43. 46 and a confining band 45 around the spaced flanges of gland and extension are provided.
