Abstract

Alkyl-substituted benzenes having at least one tertiary-alkyl group and at least one non-tertiary-alkyl group, are selectively oxidized to mono-carboxylic acids retaining the other groups in presence of an oxidation catalyst at 100-300 DEG C., and increased pressure if required. In examples the oxidation of p-t-amyl toluene to p-t-amyl benzoic acid, p-t-butyl toluene to p-t-butyl benzoic acid and p-t-dodecyl toluene to p-t-dodecyl-benzoic acid is described; numerous other mono-carboxylic acids derived from p-tertiary alkyl-substituted toluenes in which the tertiary group contains from 9-21 C atoms are described as obtained similarly; p-tertiary nonyl benzoic acid is obtained from the corresponding toluene, and a mixture of tertiary nonyl toluic acids from xylenes alkylated with propylene tetramer to give tertiary alkyl derivatives. Numerous o-, m- and p-substituted toluenes xylenes and other alkyl benzenes containing a tertiary-alkyl group are also referred to. Alkylation of toluene with propylene trimer or tetramer gives the required p-tertiary nonyl or dodecyl-toluene for the above oxidation process, the propylene tetramer being a tertiary-base-dodecylene, obtainable by polymerization of propylene.
