Abstract
1,244,029. Synthetic sulphonates. R. J. BROOKS, and B. BROOKS. 10 Dec., 1968 [29 April, 1968], No. 58557/68. Heading C2C. A synthetic sulphonate detergent is prepared by sulphonating with gaseous sulphur trioxide an organic reactant which is an olefinically unsaturated acid, or an olefin having 8 to 20 carbon atoms, or an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon the alkyl moiety having 8 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of up to 10% of a co-sulphonatable alkyl-of up to 4 carbon atoms -substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, based on the total weight of the sulphonatable material. In a modification, the sulphonation may take place in the absence of the co-sulphonatable compound and the sulphonate of the co-sulphonatable compound added after the sulphonation has stopped. The organic reactant may be subjected to a preliminary sulphonation treatment.
