Abstract

Granular polymerization products of a :b -unsaturated carboxylic acids are obtained by a process in which the reaction mixture obtained by the hydrolysis of ketone-cyanohydrins with strong mineral acids, particularly sulphuric acid, is heated and agitated in the presence of polymerization catalysts but in the absence of molecular oxygen. The catalyst may be hydrogen or benzoyl peroxide or phenyl azide, and the polymerization may be carried out on the solution obtained by the addition of water to the hydrolysis product. An example describes the preparation of polymethacrylic acid from acetone cyanohydrin.
