Abstract
Acetaldehyde is polymerized in the presence of a peroxide catalyst produced by the reaction of oxygen on acetaldehyde, by freezing the monomer at a rate corresponding to the optimum yield of polymer of the desired molecular weight, the rate being determined from the graph of the yields as a function of the freezing rate. The peroxide catalyst, which may be paracetic acid, is preferably formed in situ by oxidation of the acetaldehyde by distillation in oxygen, by ultra-violet ray irradiation of the acetaldehyde in the presence of oxygen, or by a combination of these means. When freezing is complete the mass may be macerated under water to dissolve unpolymerized acetaldehyde. The polyacetaldehyde produced has a molecular weight, varying inversely as the square root of the catalyst concentration, of between 800,000 and 3,000,000, and may be stabilized by the addition of antioxidants such as hydroquinone and alpha and beta naphthylamines. The products may be used in paints and varnishes, as adhesives, and as solid fuels.
