Abstract
684,730. Electrolysis of alkali-metal sulphate solutions. MERCK, K., MERCK, F., and MERCK, W., (trading as MERCK, E.). Jan. 23,1951 [Feb. 25, 1950], No. 1731/51. Class 41. A process for the electrolysis of aqueous alkali-metal sulphate solutions using a mercury electrode, is characterized by the use of anodes surrounded by casings of non-conducting electrolyte-resistant material, the lower ends of the casings being only a little way above the surface of the mercury and the upper ends extending above the upper surface of the electrolyte, and the electrolyte being introduced so that it flows upwardly inside the narrow channels surrounding the anodes. In the arrangement shown, anodes A in the form of rectangular strips are provided in a vessel K along the bottom of which mercury is spread. Electrolyte is introduced through an inlet E. The anodes are surrounded by casings G closed underneath by fabric M, formed of fibres resistant to attack by the electrolyte. The casings may be closed at the top for recovery of oxygen formed during electrolysis. The electrolyte flows out through exits U to a chamber R provided with a fixed or adjustable overflow S. The amalgam formed by electrolysis flows under a wall T to a chamber in which it is decomposed by water and from which the alkali lye is discharged. The mercury is pumped back to the cell K, flowing beneath a wall Z. The base of the anodes and the fabric M may be inclined, as shown, to facilitate removal of hydrogen bubbles. Means may be provided for leading off oxygen and hydrogen separately from the apparatus.
