Abstract
PURPOSE: To economically electrolyze water in a diaphragm cell by electroyzing steam supplied to the cathode chamber into H2 and O2 in a specific temp. range using fused NaOH as an electrolyte.
CONSTITUTION: In anode chamber 5 fused NaOH 9A is ionized, forming Na+ and OH-, and the OH- is converted into O2 and steam by electrode reaction and exhausted from exhaust pipe 18. In cathode chamber 6 steam supplied is converted into H2 and OH- by electrode reaction, and the H2 gas is exhausted from exhaust pipe 19. The Na+ and OH- migrate through diaphragm 4, thereby carrying out conduction of diaphragm 4 and at the same time, forming fused NaOH 9A, 9B. Steam or a gas mixed with steam is blown from jet nozzle 16 to force up NaOH 9B into vertical pipe 12 and allow it to overflow to vapor-liquid separator 13. During the time the steam is dissolved in NaOH 9B. NaOH 9B is circulated through conduits 14, 11 to supply the steam to chamber 6. By regulating the electrolytic temp. to 322W400°C, the cell voltage is lowered and water is economically electrolyzed
