Abstract

A porous vitrified ceramic body is exposed to a hydrocarbon vapour in a furnace at above 800 DEG C. in a neutral atmosphere or at a reduced pressure whereby the body is impregnated with carbon. The amount of carbon impregnating the body varies according to the length of exposure and/or concentration of the vapour. In an example, a carbon impregnated porcelain is produced.
