Abstract

683,848. Welding by fusion. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 7, 1950 [Sept. 23, 1949], No. 22085/50. Class 83 (iv). An overlapping welded joint comprises proximate pieces of metal having root sections extending therefrom, the inner surfaces of which are overlapped to form a single interstice therebetween extending in a single direction only which is substantially parallel to stresses set up by centrifugal force to which the pieces are to be subjected, grooved portions being machined from opposite surfaces of each piece, separated by the roots sections, to form substantially symmetrical spaces for the deposit of weld metal. In one embodiment, a rotor rim 10 of a gas turbine wheel is welded to a hub 9 arranged so that roots 12, 13 overlap and form grooves 14, 15 in which weld metal is deposited from an arc stream. There is no necessity to chip out the root sections.
