Abstract

646,483. Making the turbine rotors; uniting by fusion. LEWIS, H. T., and FORD, D. C. April 13, 1948, No. 10195. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A turbine or like rotor is made from axial sections or discs 1, 2 and 4, having on their transverse faces annular welding ribs 6 formed before welding together with inner circumferential grooves or recesses 7 which avoid transmission of stress to the roots of the welds, the axially-opposed ribs of adjacent discs conjointly defining a channel for welding metal 10. Prior to the welded joint being formed the discs are aligned axially by means of ribs 5 forming a socket and spigot joint thereon. A ring 9 with annular recesses 12 to isolate the base of the welding 10 is provided to bridge the gap between the bases of each pair of opposed ribs 6. The recesses 7 reduce the radial depth of the ribs adjacent their discs so as to direct stress profiles, formed during welding or when the rotor is running, away from the base of the welding 10. In another form of the invention, the ribs 5 and joint ring 9 are dispensed with and one of each pair of opposed ribs 6 is extended to locate beneath its mating rib and is provided with a circumferential recess to isolate the base of the welding.
