Piston packing. - In packing of the type comprising a pair of rings 1 pressed axially and radially by an intermediate ring 2 of wedge section, the apex angle of the ring 2 is made less than 65‹ and the radial width of the packing- ring assembly is at least one and a half times its axial depth. The ring 2 may be replaced by a pair of rings 2, 2<1>. The joint between the ends of each piston ring is made, between the points 8, 9, Fig. 3, on the surface of a cone having its apex in the cylinder axis, the cut thus penetrating the working surface and one side of the ring. The conical surface merges into curved surfaces at the ends. Specification 196,803 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) described also a joint for a ring of rectangular section comprising a finger 15, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), of approximately S shape and half the width of the ring, on one end thereof engaging a recess of similar form on the other end of the ring. A butt joint 12 between the other parts of the ends was preferably situated at a point intermediate between the ends of th finger and recess. The joint shown in Fig. 3 was applied also to a ring of rectangular section. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
