Abstract
683,211. Railway-vehicle bogies. DEHN, S. G. (General Steel Castings Corporation). Oct. 31, 1949, No. 27859/49. Class 103 (vi). A railway vehicle bogie has a laterally swinging longitudinally extending bolster 9, Figs. 1, 3, supported by leaf-springs 8 from spring planks 7, the springs being adapted to engage the ends of transverse bolster members 10, 10a, positioned at opposite sides of a middle axle. The planks 7 are in turn suspended by swing hangers 6 from the truck frame 5, which frame is carried by helical springs 4 from equalizers 3 mounted on axle boxes 2. Each axle carries an electric motor M and a gear housing H positioned as shown, the axles being unequally spaced lengthwise of the truck. A central longitudinal member 11 extends between the members 10, 10a, over the middle axle and its motor M, and has a centre support point 12 which co-operates with a centre support point 13 on the vehicle underframe and supports approximately 80 per cent of the load carried by the truck. The vertical axis of the centre-point is on the longitudinal centre line of the truck but to one side of the middle axle. Near each end of the member 10a and on the other side of the middle axle are other support points 14, positioned directly above the springs 8 and cooperating with points 15 on the vehicle frame to support 20 per cent of the load carried by the truck. The load is thus provided with a threepoint support. The preferred weight distribution is obtained with bolster springs of the same deflection rate at both ends of the bolster but of different working heights, but substantially equal loads are carried by the wheel and axle assemblies. When the vehicle body is jacked up the truck is suspended from the underframe, locking devices 20, 21 and 22 preventing separation of the truck frame and bolster, and locking devices 23, 24 preventing separation of the centre points 12 and 13.
