Abstract

Hydraulic-pneumatic intensifier apparatus for applying pressure to the caps of the bearings of rolling mills comprises a cylinder and plunger means for forcing operating liquid to the caps and means actuated by atmospheric pressure operatively connected to said plunger to move it in the direction to cause operating liquid to be forced under intensified pressure to the caps. A. plunger 1 is slidable and rotatable in a cylinder 2, provided with glands 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, and forms with the cylinder 2 an annular recess 4 connected by a pipe 5 to the bearing cap 6. The plunger is a sliding fit in a portion 10 of the cylinder 2 to which portion is connected a pipe 8 conrolled by a stop-valve 9, from a supply pump 7. At the region of the portion 10 the plunger 1 is formed with grooves 11 of different lengths to provide a dash-pot action to check the descent of the plunger in the event of failure in the cap 6. A cylinder 13 is mounted on the cylinder 2 and is connected at the lower end to a vacuum supply by a pipe 18 fitted with a regulating valve 19. The cylinder 13 is open to atmosphere at the other end. A piston 16 slidable in the cylinder is connected to the plunger 1. The pipe 19 may be connected either to a vacuum pump 22 or a vacuum main 20.
