Abstract
682,841. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control mechanism ; fluid-actuated valves. YOXALL, L. S. (Foxboro Co.). March 2, 1951, No. 5169/51. Class 135. A fluid-operated motor 13, Fig. 2, 4, for moving a valve spindle 14 comprises relatively reciprocable members 27, 23 operable under the action of pressure applied in a chamber 26 between the members and opposed by an adjustable spring 37, and means whereby either member may be fixed while the other is attached to the spindle 14, so that the direction in which the spindle is moved by increasing the pressure in the chamber may be reversed. The valve stem is attached to a bar 50, and the valve body extends as a rigid yoke 20 having arms 21, and in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the arms are attached to the lower member 23 by bolts 24, and the bar 50 is attached to arms 47 which extend from a ring 31 fixed to the upper member 27. The spring acts between the member 27 and a seat 39 carried by a hollow spindle 33 projecting from the member 23 and thus as the pressure in chamber 26 increases, the stem 14 is moved upwardly to open the valve. By reversing the connection of arms 21 and bar 50 as shown in Fig. 4, the member 27 becomes fixed, and the member 23 movable and the spring now urges the member 23 upwardly so that increasing pressure in the chamber 26 moves the stem 14 downwardly to close the valve. The chamber 26 is sealed by a diaphragm 25 connected centrally to member 23 and peripherally to member 27 by the ring 31. Pressure fluid, e.g. air, is supplied to the chamber 26 by a pipe 12 from a controller sensing, e.g., temperature, pressure or flow. The pipe 12 is connected in Fig. 2 to a bore 44 communicating with the hollow spindle 33, and in Fig. 4 with a nipple 55 in member 27. In another arrangement, the motor comprises two plates connected by a flexible, corrugated, rubber cylinder, either plate being connectible to the stem, the one not so connected being supported by the arms 21.
