Abstract

Solutions of heat-sensitive solids are evaporated to dryness by spreading the solution as a film upon a continuously moving surface made of glass, quartz, a fabric impregnated with a silicone resin, or made of any other material having a poor heat-conducting characteristic whilst being permeable to infra-red radiation, and impinging infra-red radiation directly on the film and/or passing infra-red radiation through the moving surface. A rise in temperature of the moving surface <PICT:0682675/III/1> <PICT:0682675/III/2> is substantially obviated, and consequently no heat is transmitted to the film by conduction. The production of solid gelatine and agar-agar, is ferred to. The invention may also be applied to obtain synthetic plastics and other materials which are produced by solidification of liquid mixtures by chemical change effected by heat. In Fig. 3, the external surface of a rotating drum is sprayed with liquid from arcuate plate 18 which is fed through pipe 19, and the internal surface is coated with liquid from the lip of trough 21 which is fed through pipes 22. Both films of liquid are irradiated by infra-red generators 4 and 6. The solidified material is removed from the external surface of the drum by brush 20, and collected on belt conveyer 26, while the solid is removed from the internal surface by brush 23, collected in trough 24, and discharged from the drum on to belt conveyer 27 by means of conveyer screw 25. In Fig. 5, the upper horizontal stretch of belt 33, which is made of woven glass or asbestos fibre impregnated with a silicone resin and is driven by rotating drums 34, passes between infra-red generators 36 and 38. The upper surface of the belt is coated with a film of liquid from trough 8. The solid is removed from the belt either by brush 20 or by suction duct 40. The apparatus may be enclosed within a chamber 52 which is evacuated through conduit 53. An embodiment is also described wherein both the outer and the inner surfaces of a travelling belt are coated with films of liquid. The infra-red generators may be tungsten or carbon filaments, electrically-heated platinum or other resistance wires wound on ceramic tubes, or steel or silica vessels through which hot fused salts, oil, or mercury vapour, is passed.
