Abstract

<PICT:0745057/III/1> A fusible or thermoplastic material is applied in powdered form in a substantially thin layer upon a surface of a nonmetallic transfer plate, foil or band having poor thermal conductivity or upon the surface of a rigid article or an article which becomes rigid after treatment especially a wooden board or a composite board containing wood wool or shavings, the fusible or thermoplastic material is heated until it is in a plastic condition whereupon the surface of the transfer plate, foil or band and the surface of the article are pressed together to produce a polished surface on the article. Glass, ceramic or other plates having a glazed surface may be used, or the foil or band may be of plastic. They may be pressed on to the article by yieldable heat-insulating supports which may, if desired, be equipped with heating wires or sources of radiant heat. Separating layers of waxes or silicones may be applied to the transfer plate prior to the application of the fusible material. Yieldable materials such as felt, asbestos or rubber may be used on the reverse side of the article to be treated, these serving also as extra heat insulators. If desired, the process may be carried out continuously by means of an endless transfer band, the articles to be treated travelling parallel to and at the same speed as the band. Specified fusible substances include polyacrylic and polymethacrylic compounds, polyamides, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, fusible phenolic and urea resins, natural resins, cellulose derivatives and other organic and inorganic substances fusible without pressure, with or without the addition of plasticisers, fillers (glass powder, fine asbestos fibres, pure silica) or colouring agents. Mixtures of these substances which melt at low temperatures giving a melt which after hardening or gelatinization has a higher softening temperature may be used. As shown (Fig. 1) an insulating mass in a container 3 is uniformly applied by a spreader 4 to an endless travelling band 2. A fusible or thermoplastic material from a container 5 is then applied and heated by a device 7. The articles to be polished 8 are carried along by a travelling band 10 at the same speed and parallel to the band 2 which is pressed by rollers 9 into contact with the articles 8. Additional pressing rollers 12 may be provided to assist in holding the article and band 2 in contact. The band 2 and article 8 then pass over cooling rollers 13 and the article is removed from band 10. Articles with uneven surfaces may be treated by using yieldable rubber bags filled with a pressure medium to obtain the pressing action. If desired, the articles to be treated may be situated below the band 2. In a modification a polished surface may be restored or repaired by using a foil coated with a separating agent and remelting the polished surface by means of a hot laundry iron or similar heating means.
